Why should I have it done?
After an average of three years, the boiling point of brake fluid will have dropped to dangerous levels. This is due to moisture build up in braking fluid, reducing its viscosity and resistance to the enormous forces that it needs to sustain.
What happens if I don’t do it now?
Glycol based braking fluid begins to absorb moisture the moment it is installed. After just two years of use, your brake fluid can have as much as 2% water content. This can cause greater wear and tear on your brake system. But it can also create a potential for failure. Often times, so-called “unexplained” brake failures are due to brake fluid that is heavily contaminated with water. When a brake failure has occurred, and no mechanical fault can be found, the vast majority of the time, old brake fluid is the culprit. The times during which you are most likely to experience a fluid related brake failure are the times when braking is most important. Emergency stops put a great deal of heat and stress on your brakes. That heat and kinetic energy must be absorbed by the brake fluid. That means if your brakes are going to fail- they are most likely to do so at the worst possible time.
